Modern Roofing Materials: TPO

TPO-system.png

TPO stands for Thermalplastic Olefin, which comes in white, grey or black sheets as single ply roofing membrane used to cover industrial and commercial flat roofs. Known especially for its superior heat peel strengths and ultra low temperature flexibility, TPO is used to create what is known as the “cool roof”. That means it reflects and emits the sun’s heat back skyward without allowing it to pass into the building or home. The more sun a cool roof reflects and emits, the cooler the roof.

TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane material made into sheet form from ethylene propylene rubber, and is a combination of rubber and hot air welded seams. Invented by chemical company DOW in the early 1990′s, the TPO membrane is already attached to the substrate material with adhesive, forming a strong chemical bond. It is a higher end material compared to other popular choices like EPDM to the higher priced TPO materials.

TPO is popular as a green choice, recyclable and even able to be burned as a fuel. TPO burns extremely clean without toxic emissions when no flame retardants are present, therefore having great potential as a high energy fuel for waste-to-energy programs.

Many Features of TPO
  • Highly heat reflective
    • Keeps building cool while resisting breakdown
  • Algae resistant
    • Helps prevent deterioration in highly moist conditions
  • Fire resistant
  • Ozone resistant
  •     Helps prevent deterioration & adds fire retardancy
  • Energy efficient
    • Saves on heating-cooling budget & protects environment
  • UV resistant
  • Dirt repellant
  • Impact resistant
    • Great protection against hail
  • Tear & puncture resistant
  • Very flexible
    • Offers allowance for building shift & movement
  • Recyclable

TPO has several big advantages over EDPM: it is thermoplastic vs. thermoset, and has heat welded seams instead of adhered. It is not always the clear winner however, in colder climates and seasons, as TPO sheets are somewhat stiff, which can make installation challenging, however low-temperature flexibility sheets should be available soon. TPO is a superior choice for most commercial and industrial building applications.
