What's Your Roof Made of: Different Roofing Materials from Mike Ragan Roofing

Whether you just bought and are looking to replace the roof on your new house, or you are looking for a roofing upgrade on your current home, Mike Ragan Roofing is the roofing contractor for you.

Here’s a quick list of the different types of roofingmaterials and the benefits and drawbacks of each.

1.     Asphalt Shingle Roofs.  By far the most popular roofing material, asphalt shingles are cheap, easy to install, and durable.  However, asphalt shingles aren’t great insulators and have a shorter lifespan than most roofing material.
2.     Wood Roofs.  Wood shingles come in a variety of styles and types of wood.  Although highly durable and aesthetically pleasing, wood shingles are also highly flammable, so if you’re in an area that’s high risk for forest fires, we don’t recommend this type of roof.
3.     Clay Shingle Roofs.  On the flip side of wood, clay and concrete tiles are non flammable, and highly durable.  They can come in a variety of styles and colors and also reflect the sun’s solar energy.  The most protective roofing material, tiles are also the heaviest, and may require additional framing to support the added weight to your roof.
4.     Metal Roofs.  Metal roofs are very popular with new homes and businesses.  They reflect the sun’s heat, making them ideal for bright locations and often last twice as long as wood or asphalt.  A bit on the pricey side, we believe the longevity factor more than makes up for the added cost.

Mike Ragan Roofing specializes in emergency roof repair, roof improvements, asphalt shingle roofing, membrane roofing, standing seam metal roofing, copper roofing and gutters.  We service Nashville, Franklin, Brentwood, Wilson, Sumner, Cheatham, and Robertson, Tennessee.
