Modern Roofing Materials: TPO

TPO-system.png

TPO stands for Thermalplastic Olefin, which comes in white, grey or black sheets as single ply roofing membrane used to cover industrial and commercial flat roofs. Known especially for its superior heat peel strengths and ultra low temperature flexibility, TPO is used to create what is known as the “cool roof”. That means it reflects and emits the sun’s heat back skyward without allowing it to pass into the building or home. The more sun a cool roof reflects and emits, the cooler the roof.

TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane material made into sheet form from ethylene propylene rubber, and is a combination of rubber and hot air welded seams. Invented by chemical company DOW in the early 1990′s, the TPO membrane is already attached to the substrate material with adhesive, forming a strong chemical bond. It is a higher end material compared to other popular choices like EPDM to the higher priced TPO materials.

TPO is popular as a green choice, recyclable and even able to be burned as a fuel. TPO burns extremely clean without toxic emissions when no flame retardants are present, therefore having great potential as a high energy fuel for waste-to-energy programs.

Many Features of TPO
  • Highly heat reflective
    • Keeps building cool while resisting breakdown
  • Algae resistant
    • Helps prevent deterioration in highly moist conditions
  • Fire resistant
  • Ozone resistant
  •     Helps prevent deterioration & adds fire retardancy
  • Energy efficient
    • Saves on heating-cooling budget & protects environment
  • UV resistant
  • Dirt repellant
  • Impact resistant
    • Great protection against hail
  • Tear & puncture resistant
  • Very flexible
    • Offers allowance for building shift & movement
  • Recyclable

TPO has several big advantages over EDPM: it is thermoplastic vs. thermoset, and has heat welded seams instead of adhered. It is not always the clear winner however, in colder climates and seasons, as TPO sheets are somewhat stiff, which can make installation challenging, however low-temperature flexibility sheets should be available soon. TPO is a superior choice for most commercial and industrial building applications.

EPDM: a Revolutionary Commercial Roofing Product

epdm-roofing-diagram.jpg

EPDM = ethylene propylene diene monomer. An elastomeric polymer, EPDM is classified as a flexible membrane roofing product. It is one of the key products that caused a revolution in commercial and residential roofing industry materials when it was introduced over the forty years ago.

EPDM is Classified as a "Thermoset”
Because it is typically cured, or vulcanized. This means that the polymer's molecular structure is "set" as a result of heating during the manufacturing process. Uncured EPDM membranes are sometimes used for flashings; but this material is not as effective as it will will eventually cure as it naturally ages under the exposure to UV light and heat.

Cooler, Cleaner & Easier to Install
Early in the flexible membrane market explosion, owners and contractors both recognized EPDM roofing as a much cooler, cleaner and easier product to install than the built-up roofs (hot tar or asphalt) to which they were accustomed. With minimal financial investment, they were able to obtain all the tools and equipment needed to properly install an EPDM roof. Another great benefit of the EPDM roof system is that they are low maintenance, with easy repair options and a low annualized cost. The application does require skilled preparation and application in order for the system to be solid. As demand for flexible membrane systems grew quickly, many contractors assembled crews that specialized in the installation of EPDM membranes to take advantage of the it’s surging popularity.

Two EPDM Application Systems
EPDM membranes may be installed with two types of system applications. The most common and popular installation of EPDM mechanically attaches the membrane using screws and attachment strips. They may also be fully adhered to rigid insulation board or an appropriate structural deck with water or solvent-based adhesives. Both systems eliminates the weight of other recover systems. The mechanically fastened system is widely preferred because it is lightweight and easy to install. Both systems are very attractive, smooth and clean in their final appearance.

Features of EPDM
  • Cleaner, cooler and easier to handle than built-up roofs
  • Highly flexible and pliable
  • Versatility in application methods
    • Works for any roof shape, slope, height, and climatic exposures
  • Able to withstand structural movement
  • Able to withstand high and low temperature thermal stresses
  • Resistant to some chemicals found on roofs
  • Acids, alkalis, certain oils and oxygenated solvents
  • Low maintenance
  • Easy repair
  • Low annualized cost
  • Available in black & white
  • Competitively price & installation cost
  • Long-term warranties available
  • Attractive life cycle cost

Some Limitations of EPDM
  • Not resistant to aromatic, halogenated or aliphatic solvents
  • Not resistant to cooking grease of animal fats
    • Makes it a poor choice for restaurants & some food manufacturers
