5 Steps to Winterize Your Roof

roof with snow and icicles.jpg
Fall is here, and for Middle Tennessee homeowners, that means it’s time to begin preparing for the harsh weather of winter. At Mike Ragan Roofing & Sheet Metal, we care about helping you  keep your roof as safe and sound as possible. That’s why we we’ve put together this list of 5 key steps to winterize your roof.

1) Gutter Duty

Fall is famous for it’s steady stream of falling leaves carpeting the earth. Naturally, that includes your roof and gutters, and often leads to clogged gutters and downspouts. As your gutter system fails, your roof, trim, siding, and foundation are at risk. Always check, clean, and repair any necessary issues to avoid costly, unexpected repair bills. Having gutter guards installed is an excellent way to minimize your risk as well as your seasonal maintenance load.

    2) Remove Roof Debris

Those leaves we just talked about? They contain moisture that can quickly degrade into mildew and decay. Soon, that same mildew and decay can be imparted into your roof, leading to spots of serious roof failure. That’s why ridding your roof of all debris is another important maintenance issue in winterizing your roof.

    3) Trim Low-Hanging Branches and Unhealthy Trees

Most everyone knows what it’s like to walk outdoors after a wintry storm. Branches everywhere! This is a  good year-round tip, but it’s especially important in preparing for winter, when heavy snow and ice can cause vulnerable limbs to snap. This can lead to felled power lines, as well as severe roof damage when a crashing branch falls in an unfortunate location. Don't let this happen to you! Always be sure to trim or remove low-hanging branches. Also, inspect all trees on your property for health. Arranging to remove dead or dying trees can do much to save your roof from damage.

    4) Inspect Attic Insulation and Ventilation

How is the quality of airflow in your attic? If  your answer is anything less than “good”, your roof could be in trouble - not to mention your utility bill! Mounting snow on a roof will eventually find its way to any available areas of damage, leading to roof leaks and degradation. Hiring a professional roofing expert to evaluate the fitness of your attic’s insulation and ventilation will help you discover any areas that need attention.

    5) Inspect For Roof Damage and Breakdown

Once your roof has been cleaned, perform a thorough inspection. Better yet, rely on a local roofing professional to do the best job for you. Survey particularly for damaged or missing shingles and flashing, as these are the most common sources of roof damage. Remember, in the case that you discover damage, do not delay in attending to it. At Mike Ragan Roofing, estimates are always free, and financing is available.

Don’t get caught out in the cold!

Prepare your home for winter today. Following these 5 basic tips can make the all the difference in ensuring your roof will keep your family warm, safe and dry all winter. The Dangers of Wind to a Commercial Roof

    roof.jpg
    The Battle for Your Roof
The roofing system of your facility is key to the overall health, longevity, and profitability of your property. As what is often considered to be a building’s greatest asset, it is extremely important to consider steps to safeguard your roofing system from the many dangers it encounters each day. One of the greatest threats to the integrity of your roofing system is wind. Your commercial roof is being battling against each and every time winds of any strength hit. The kind of damage that can spell roof system failure doesn’t need to be a violent, brute force.

    Wind Uplift
When roof materials are separated from their base by the force of the wind, that’s wind uplift, and it’s one of the biggest dangers for causing damage to a flat roof system. Often appearing as wrinkling or bubbling because the membrane or other materials are no longer attached, wind uplift makes your roof vulnerable to decay from elemental moisture sources like rain, snow, hail, and humidity.

    Wind Scouring
Wind scouring removes the gravel placed as a surface component on built-up roofs. It is another major wind related threat to your Nashville roofing system, as it can seriously impact the life of your commercial roof. It causes more rapid deterioration, which results in partial or total roof system failure that will lead to the need for a new replacement roof.

The Benefits of Metal Roofs vs. Asphalt

    metal roofing.jpg

    Metal vs. Asphalt
If you want a quick answer to the question of which is better, metal wins hands down. It is considered a superior material for roofing in almost all categories compared to asphalt. Still, asphalt continues to remain the most popular residential roofing choice. What accounts for this preference? It is likely that some simply don’t prefer the look of metal. However, the biggest factor to account for the steady number one position of  asphalt has got to be the lower upfront cost. It’s true, the cost of metal roofing ranges from somewhat higher  to significantly higher. But when you factor in longevity and performance, asphalt is no longer the front runner in the affordability category. Here is a list of

    Metal Roofs Are...
    • Stronger and lighter than asphalt.
    • Made of a higher percentage of recycled material.
    • Able to be recycled again if the house becomes demolished.
      • Asphalt shingles are made from petroleum products, not suited for recycling.
      • The majority of torn-off asphalt comp shingles end up as toxic waste in a landfill.
    • Extremely design friendly, with many more shapes, colors and configurations.
    • Available in a variety of options:
      • Long vertical panels
      • Horizontal panels
      • Shingles
      • Shakes
      • Diamond shingles,
      • Tiles and more.
    • Not susceptible to UV degradation (as asphalt shingles are), so they typically outlast asphalt roofs by decades.
    • Much better at remaining secure and intact during high winds because they don't degrade in the sun.
    • Resilient, retaining their as-new performance usually their entire life.
    • Able to offer homeowners a large selection of reflective finishes.
    • More energy efficient due to their vented roof assembly.
    • Incombustible for the duration of their life.
    • Generally the lowest maintenance new roofing option available.
    • More attractive than asphalt shingles.
    • A great option for those looking for longevity in their roofing material.
